Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris
This is by far one of my most beloved bands of all time! Ian Curtis was a musical genius. His lyrics are dark and honest. The music is haunting in a way that decades later Joy Divisions influence is still heard in many of our modern time bands. Ian Curtis has one of those voices that you either love or hate. I have to admit when I first heard his voice it took my ears a little time to adjust to the monotone and at times tone deaf way Ian sings. Once I learned to appreciate Joy Division I was devastated by the knowledge that I would never get to see them live....
Joy Division was long gone before I could even say my first words. Ian Cutis committed suicide 72 hours before they were to leave for America for Joy Divisions first ever American Tour. They remain a legend here. I have caught many Americans who would have been old enough to see this infamous band lie about seeing them at this place or that in the States. Unless you saw them in Europe you never got to see them at all. At times it seems that Ian’s death has over shadowed what a ground breaking and daring band this was. They are a myth, to many legends. For those of us who never saw them we romanticize about what seeing Joy Division would have been like. For those who saw them they can reflect back to seeing and experiencing something that was lost upon the world the day that Ian Curtis committed suicide. ~ Veronica Mihalopoulos
Joy Division were an English rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. Originally named Warsaw, the band primarily consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion).
Joy Division rapidly evolved from their initial punk rock influences, to develop a sound and style that pioneered the post-punk movement of the late 1970s. According to music critic Jon Savage, the band "were not punk but were directly inspired by its energy." Their self-released 1978 debut EP, An Ideal for Living, caught the attention of the Manchester television personality Tony Wilson. Joy Division's debut album, Unknown Pleasures, was released in 1979 on Wilson's independent record label Factory Records, and drew critical acclaim from the British press. Despite the band's growing success, vocalist Ian Curtis was beset with depression and personal difficulties, including a dissolving marriage and his diagnosis with epilepsy. Curtis found it increasingly difficult to perform at live concerts, and often had seizures during performances.
In May 1980, on the eve of the band's first American tour, Curtis, overwhelmed with depression, committed suicide. Joy Division's posthumously released second album, Closer, and the single "Love Will Tear Us Apart" became the band's highest charting releases. After the death of Curtis, the remaining members reformed as New Order, achieving critical and commercial success.Wikipedia

Love Will Tear Us Apart -Lyrics by Ian Curtis
When routine bites hard And ambitions are low And resentment rides high But emotions won't grow And we're changing our ways, taking different roads Then love, love will tears us apart again Love, love will tears us apart again Why is the bedroom so cold You've turned away on your side Is my timing that flawed? Our respect run so dry Yet there's still this appeal that we've kept through our lives But love, love will tears us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again You cry out in your sleep All my failings exposed And there's a taste in my mouth As desperation takes hold Just that something so good just can't function no more But love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again
