In praise of gothic artwork, medieval art, vampire art and artists of all kinds, this section is devoted to the ones who put pen to paper, paint to canvas or ink to skin. You’ll see examples of beautiful photography of gothic pictures as well as horror art that is no doubt created by the brilliance of the dark little minds that are most productive after midnight! Here you can read about our favorite poets, painters, clothing designers, corsetieres, make-up artists, hairstylists, haberdashers, and tattoo artists.

Gothic artwork can be found in architecture, furniture design, vampire art of course and the bloody horror art that keeps us awake at night (scary comics anyone!) We hope to cover your favorite gothic artwork whether it is tattoos, classic medieval art, or simple photographs that have the beautiful aesthetics of the perfect gothic picture. Medieval art, which is such a realistic version of gothic artwork, can be found at many galleries around the world and we will be sure to feature the fabulous places that house such masterpieces.

Keep a lookout for contests – sometimes they involve gothic artwork and ask for your version of one of our characters. If your style is horror inspired vampire derived or medieval art is your forte you are bound to find something of interest here!

Mermaid Fantasy Art

Article written by Veronica Mihalopoulos

My fascination with mermaids began long ago. It all started with an 80’s movie called “Splash”. This movie came out in 1984.  It stared Tom Hanks as Alan Bauer and Daryl Hannah as Madison. Alan was a little boy who while out to sea on a cruise fell overboard and was rescued by a mermaid. Years, later a mysterious woman enters his life and Alan falls in love with her. What he does not know is that Madison was the little mermaid that saved him from drowning. I was only 7 years old when my mom took me and my brother to see this movie. It left a lasting impression on my young mind. I have to admit that for a while, I believed mermaids were real. I grew up in a coastal community called San Pedro. This is in the Port of Los Angeles. Every time my mom took us on walks along the coast, I would day dream about seeing a mermaid. I know better now. However, the intrigue of mermaids never left me.

Mermaid art still captures my attention. Perhaps it is really the thought of something part human belonging to an underwater world. I love the ocean and the mystery it holds. Sometimes it scares me because I know we can never survive on our own in open water. It simply is not our world. The ocean can be soothing and very serene, but so many disastrous things have happened out there. Some of those things still remain unknown, lost and at the bottom of the abyss. Not too long after seeing “Splash”, during my many visits to Cabrillo Beach, I was swept away by a wave that held me under. If it was not for the fast action of a life guard, I surely would have drowned that day. I remember not being able to breath and wishing I was a mermaid or that a mermaid would save me. Silly but true.

In some cultures and mythology mermaids have been depicted as mischievous sirens. Distracting humans and causing them to walk off deck in the middle of storms or causing them to crash into rocks. Regardless of what we have thought up in our imagination mermaids have inspired some very beautiful and sensual art.

Some of my favorite fantasy artist are Julie Bell, David Delamare, Jim Warren, Boris Vallejo, Howard David Johnson, Selina Fenech, Noah (Fine Art), Josephine Wall and Will Cormier to name a few. Mermaids, for the most part are always depicted as care free creatures. It is not a wonder why they have influenced the imagination of many great artists. I know a lot of people who are obsessed with fairy art and although I can enjoy that as well mermaids will always have a special place in my heart. Hope you enjoy the artists I have featured in this article.
